How does the free SEO audit tool work?

The tool runs Google's Lighthouse (opens in new tab) on your page and checks its code, then shows the results right away.

  1. Enter a URL. Any public page works: your homepage, a service page or a blog post.
  2. Pick mobile or desktop. Mobile is the default.
  3. Read your results. Scores, Core Web Vitals and a pass, needs-work or fail list, each with a link to a guide on how to fix it.
  4. Email yourself the full report, if you want. It's optional.

What do the scores mean?

Each Lighthouse score runs from 0 to 100, and higher is better. They're lab tests run once on one page, so treat them as a guide, not a grade.

  • SEO: basic checks that help search engines find and understand the page, such as a title, a meta description and crawlable links.
  • Performance: how fast the page loads and responds in a lab test.
  • Best Practices: security and modern web standards, such as HTTPS and safe scripts.
  • Accessibility: whether people using keyboards, screen readers or zoom can use the page.

What do the Core Web Vitals mean?

Core Web Vitals measure how a page feels to real visitors: how fast it loads, how fast it responds and how stable it is. When enough real Chrome users have visited, we show their data from the last 28 days. Otherwise we show lab results and label them "lab".

What the free audit doesn't cover

The free tool tests one page at one moment, so it can't see problems across your whole site. It won't find pages Google can't index, duplicate content between pages, broken internal links elsewhere on the site or redirect problems after a migration.

That's what a full technical SEO audit is for. If you'd rather do it yourself, our guide on how to do a technical SEO audit walks through the method.

FAQs

Is the SEO audit tool really free?

Yes. Every score, Core Web Vitals result and fix shows on screen at no cost, with no sign-up. Emailing yourself the full report is optional.

Is this a full SEO audit?

No. It checks one URL at one moment: Lighthouse scores, Core Web Vitals and on-page basics. A full technical SEO audit looks at your whole site, checks findings by hand and ranks fixes by impact.

Will fixing these issues improve my rankings?

Not on its own, and no tool can promise rankings. These checks find technical problems that can hold a page back. Rankings also depend on your content, relevance and links.

Why do my scores change each time I run it?

Lighthouse scores are lab tests, and network speed, server load and third-party scripts vary from run to run. Small swings are normal. Look at the trend and at the issues found, not one number.

Why don't I see Core Web Vitals for my page?

Field data only exists when enough real Chrome users have visited the page. If there isn't enough, we show lab results instead and label them "lab".

Can I test a page that isn't live yet?

No. The tool can only reach public URLs. Pages behind a login, on a staging site or on a private network can't be tested.
