AI visibility metrics measure how often AI tools name your business, link to your pages and send you visitors, and whether they describe you correctly. No single number covers it. Google reports AI impressions, Bing reports AI citations, analytics shows referrals, and your own prompt checks show mentions and accuracy. A good AI visibility report combines a few of each, set against your own baseline. This explainer defines the metrics worth tracking and where each one comes from. It's part of our AI search optimization guide.

Key takeaways

  • AI visibility needs several metrics; no single number covers every engine.
  • Prompt checks show mentions, citations and accuracy; first-party reports show trends.
  • Google reports AI impressions; Bing reports AI citations; analytics shows referrals.
  • Set targets against your own baseline. There are no published industry benchmarks.

The core AI visibility metrics

The table below lists the metrics we find most useful, grouped by where the data comes from. Every one can be measured today with free tools or a spreadsheet.

Core AI visibility metrics, their sources and their limits

The left column is what you report. The right column is what you say out loud when you report it, so nobody reads more into a number than it holds.

Metrics from your own prompt checks

Four metrics come from asking AI tools a fixed set of buyer questions each month and logging the answers. The method is set out in how to track AI mentions.

Mention rate is the share of tracked answers that name your business. If you run 30 prompts on three engines, that's 90 answers. Count the ones that name you.

Citation rate is the share of answers that link to one of your pages. It is often lower than mention rate, because an answer can name you while citing a directory or review site instead.

Accuracy rate is the share of answers that mention you and get the facts right: what you do, who you serve, how to reach you. It's the metric most teams skip, and the one most likely to expose a problem a buyer would see.

Source share looks at the other side: across all answers, which sites get cited most for your topics. It shows you who the engines trust in your market, and where your business needs to be mentioned.

Metrics from first-party reports

Three platforms report AI visibility directly. Each measures something different, so never add them together.

AI impressions (Google). Search Console's generative AI performance report counts how often links to your site appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode. You can break it down by page, country, device and date. It reports impressions only. Clicks from AI Overviews are counted in the main Performance report under the Web search type, mixed with other results.

AI citations (Bing). Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report counts how often your pages are cited in Microsoft Copilot, Bing's AI summaries and some partner experiences. It also shows the grounding queries behind those citations. Bing says the data is a sample, not a complete log, so read it as a trend.

AI referrals (analytics). Visits from ChatGPT, Perplexity and other AI tools show up by source or referring domain, such as chatgpt.com. Some AI visits arrive with no referrer and land in Direct, so treat these totals as a floor.

Metrics that tie AI visibility to revenue

Visibility only matters if it leads somewhere. Two metrics connect it to the business.

AI-referred conversions are enquiries, sign-ups or sales from sessions that arrived from an AI tool. Set them up as a segment in analytics using the referral sources above. Volumes may be small at first, so look at them over a quarter, not a week.

Engagement from AI referrals covers time on site and pages per visit for those sessions. Google says clicks from results pages with AI Overviews tend to be higher quality, with visitors spending more time on the site. It didn't publish a figure, so check that claim against your own data rather than assuming it.

Neither metric captures influence without a click. A buyer who read your name in an AI answer and then searched for you directly shows up as branded search or Direct traffic. That's why mention rate stays in the report even when referrals look small.

How to turn metrics into KPIs

A metric becomes a KPI when you attach a target and an owner. Keep the list short. Three to five KPIs reviewed monthly beat a dashboard nobody reads.

Start with a baseline month. Record every metric above without judging it. Then pick targets against that baseline, such as raising mention rate on service prompts or lifting accuracy to every answer that names you. There are no published industry benchmarks for these numbers, and Google warns that no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems. Be wary of anyone selling you a benchmark without a method.

Keep definitions fixed. If you change the prompt list, start a new trend line rather than mixing old and new. And always report the limit next to the number. Our AI search reporting template puts these metrics into a ready-made monthly layout.

To act on what the numbers show, start with optimizing for Google AI Overviews. If you'd rather have this measured and reported for you, our in-house SEO team does it end to end, including reporting on where clients are mentioned in Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT.

Common questions

What is a good AI mention rate?

There is no published benchmark, and anyone quoting one should show their method. Mention rate depends on your prompt list, your market and the engines you check. Set your own baseline in the first month, then judge progress against it. A rising rate on a fixed prompt list means more than any comparison with another company's numbers.

Should AI visibility metrics replace my usual SEO KPIs?

No. Add them alongside. Google says its AI features are rooted in its core ranking systems, so rankings, organic clicks and indexed pages still drive much of your AI visibility. Report the AI metrics as a separate section of the same report, so you can see whether changes in classic search and AI answers move together.

Which AI visibility metric matters most?

The one closest to revenue that you can measure reliably. For most businesses that is AI referral traffic that converts, backed by mention rate on buyer prompts. Impressions and citations show reach; accuracy protects your reputation. Report a small set together, because each one covers a gap the others leave.
