To get cited by Perplexity, let its search crawler, PerplexityBot, reach your pages, then give it current, well-sourced answers to specific questions. Perplexity searches the web for each question and attaches numbered citations to its answers, so the pages it can reach and trust at that moment are the ones it can cite. Perplexity doesn't publish how it ranks sources, so no one can promise a citation.
You'll need access to robots.txt, your firewall or CDN settings and your server logs. This guide is part of our AI search optimization guide.
How Perplexity finds and cites pages
Perplexity describes itself as an answer engine. Its help center sets out four steps. It interprets the question, searches the internet in real time, compiles the most relevant information into one answer, and adds numbered citations that link to the original sources. Follow-up questions keep the context of the conversation. Its Research mode runs many searches and reads many sources before it writes a longer report.
Two documented agents touch your site:
- PerplexityBot crawls to surface and link websites in Perplexity's search results. Perplexity says it is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models.
- Perplexity-User fetches a page when a user's question needs it. Perplexity says this fetcher generally ignores robots.txt, because a person asked for the fetch.
Perplexity publishes how to let these agents in. It doesn't publish what decides which reachable page earns a citation. That's the gap the content steps below work around.
Steps 1-3: Let the Perplexity crawler reach you
- Allow PerplexityBot in robots.txt.
Perplexity recommends allowing PerplexityBot if you want to appear in its results. Check your live robots.txt for any group naming PerplexityBot, and for a catch-all group that blocks paths you care about. To be explicit, add:
textUser-agent: PerplexityBot Allow: /Perplexity says each setting works independently and changes can take up to 24 hours to apply.
- Allow Perplexity's crawlers at your firewall.
If you use a web application firewall (WAF) or CDN bot protection, it may block PerplexityBot even when robots.txt allows it. Perplexity's guidance is to create an allow rule that matches both the user agent and its published IP ranges, rather than the user agent alone. Its IP lists live at perplexity.com/perplexitybot.json and perplexity.com/perplexity-user.json. Perplexity notes the ranges change, so update them on a schedule.
- Understand what Perplexity-User does.
Because Perplexity-User generally ignores robots.txt, a disallow rule doesn't stop every Perplexity request. Plan around that. Anything you need kept private belongs behind a login, not just a robots.txt rule. Everything you want cited should load fully for a normal request, with no extra hurdles.
Steps 4-6: Shape pages Perplexity can cite
- Keep key pages current and dated.
Perplexity searches the web when the question is asked, so what it reads is whatever your page says right now. Review your most important pages on a schedule. Update facts that change, such as services, process, hours and team. Show a visible "last updated" date so readers, and any tool quoting you, can judge how fresh the information is. Update the date only when the content actually changes.
- Back claims with sources, quotes and specific facts.
The research paper that named generative engine optimization tested content changes on Perplexity. Adding quotations from relevant sources and adding statistics both improved visibility on the paper's measures. Statistics improved one measure by up to 37%. Keyword stuffing did about 10% worse than no change. The test used uploaded source text, not live results, so treat it as direction. Use only facts you can stand behind, and name the source.
- Put a direct answer under every question heading.
A cited passage has to make sense on its own. Use the question as a heading, answer it in the first sentence or two, then add detail. Avoid openings like "As mentioned above" that depend on other parts of the page. For ChatGPT's version of these checks, see how to get cited by ChatGPT.
Step 7: Test and measure
- Check your logs and test real questions.
First confirm PerplexityBot is reaching your pages and getting 200 responses. On a server that writes common log format, this counts response codes for its requests:
bashgrep "PerplexityBot" access.log | awk '{print $9}' | sort | uniq -cLots of 403 or 429 codes mean a firewall or rate limit is in the way. Next, write down the questions buyers ask before they hire you. Ask each one in Perplexity and record the date, whether you're cited, which page and which other sources appear. Repeat monthly and look for patterns. In analytics, watch for referral sessions from perplexity.ai.
If you'd rather have a team handle the access checks and ongoing tracking, our in-house SEO team does this work end to end, from crawler access to ongoing citation tracking.
Troubleshooting
PerplexityBot requests return 403 or a challenge page
Cause: a security layer is blocking the crawler before it reaches your content. Bot-fight modes, managed challenges, rate limits and country blocks are common culprits. robots.txt can say "Allow" and still have no effect if the request never gets past the firewall.
Fix: in your WAF or CDN, add an allow rule that matches the PerplexityBot user agent and Perplexity's published IP ranges together, and give it higher priority than your blocking rules. Perplexity's crawler documentation includes example setups for common WAFs. Wait up to a day, then check your access logs again for 200 responses. If the blocks continue, look for a second security layer, such as a host-level firewall, that sits behind the CDN.
Perplexity cites an old version of your page
Cause: the page may not have been re-crawled since you changed it, or another site still repeats your old information. Perplexity reads what it can reach when the question is asked, and that can include third-party pages quoting outdated details.
Fix: confirm the live page shows the new facts in plain HTML and that PerplexityBot is getting 200 responses. Make the update obvious with a visible updated date and clear wording. Then find the other sites that still repeat the old details, such as directories, profiles or older articles, and ask for corrections. Retest the same question after a few days.
Perplexity cites other sites for questions about your own business
Cause: your own site may not answer the question directly. If your services page never says what you do in plain words, Perplexity has to rely on directories, review sites or articles that do.
Fix: add a clear page or section that answers the exact question in its first sentence: what you do, who it's for and how it works. Keep your business name, services and contact details consistent across your site and listings. Then retest the question. It may take several crawls before your page is chosen over sources Perplexity already relies on. For Google, see how AI Overviews choose sources.
Common questions
Does Perplexity use my content to train AI models?
Perplexity says no for both of its documented agents. PerplexityBot is described as surfacing and linking websites in Perplexity search results and not as a crawler for AI foundation models. Perplexity-User fetches pages when a user asks a question, and Perplexity says it is not used to collect training content. Check Perplexity's crawler page for changes, since policies can be updated.
How quickly does Perplexity pick up robots.txt changes?
Perplexity says each crawler setting works independently and that changes can take up to 24 hours to show in its systems. After editing robots.txt or firewall rules, wait a day before testing. Then check your access logs for PerplexityBot requests and their response codes, and rerun a few test questions to confirm your pages can be cited.
Can I block Perplexity completely?
You can block PerplexityBot with a robots.txt disallow rule, which removes your pages from its search crawling. Perplexity-User is different: Perplexity says it generally ignores robots.txt because a person requested the fetch. To stop those fetches you would need firewall rules or a login wall. Blocking both also means Perplexity can't cite or link your pages.
Do I need different content for Perplexity than for Google?
No. The same pages can serve both. Perplexity searches the web and cites sources, and Google says its AI features use standard SEO best practices. The differences are in access, since Perplexity has its own crawlers, and in how often Perplexity re-reads the web. Write one strong, current page per question and make sure every engine can reach it.
