Brand mentions are references to your business on sites you don't own, such as an article quoting your founder, a directory listing or a forum thread recommending you. They matter for AI search because AI tools build answers from what the web says about you, not just from your own pages. Google says its generative AI features can show what's being said about products and services across the web. This explainer is part of our AI search optimization guide.

A mention doesn't need a link to shape an answer. If enough trusted pages describe you the same way, that description is what an AI tool has to work with.

Key takeaways

  • AI answers draw on what the web says about you, not just what your site says.
  • A mention can shape an answer even without a link.
  • Google says chasing inauthentic mentions isn't as helpful as it might seem.
  • Paid placements must be disclosed and links qualified as sponsored or nofollow.

Linked mentions, unlinked mentions and citations

Three terms get mixed up here, so it helps to separate them.

A linked mention names your brand and links to your site. It can send visitors and helps search engines connect the page to you.

An unlinked mention names your brand with no link. It sends no clicks, but the words are still there for any system that reads the page.

A citation in AI search is different again. It's a source an AI answer links to or lists. Perplexity, for example, says each answer includes numbered citations linking to the original sources. A citation might be your own page, or a third-party page that mentions you.

So mentions feed the answer, and citations show where the answer came from. You want both: accurate mentions across the web, and your own pages cited when the question is about you.

What the engines say about mentions

The engines publish very little on this, so it's worth being exact about what is known.

Google's guide to generative AI features says they can show what's being said about products and services across the web, "including in blogs, videos, and forum discussions." The same guide warns that "seeking inauthentic 'mentions' across the web isn't as helpful as it might seem." Read together, the message is clear: genuine coverage counts, manufactured coverage doesn't pay off.

Independent research shows which kinds of sites get cited. Pew Research Center found in March 2025 that Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit were the most frequently cited sources in Google's AI summaries, together making up 15% of the sources cited.

No engine has published how much a mention counts, linked or not, or a list of "mention ranking factors." Anyone selling a precise formula is guessing.

Where brand mentions come from

Mentions build up from many places over time. The table below covers the common sources and what you can do about each.

How to earn mentions that hold up

The mentions worth having are the ones a journalist, partner or customer chose to write. They're also the hardest to fake, which is why they carry weight.

  • Give people something to cite. Original data, clear explanations and expert opinions get quoted. Restating what everyone else says rarely does.
  • Make your facts easy to repeat. A plain About page, a short company description and consistent details make it easy for writers to describe you correctly, as covered in entity SEO and the Knowledge Graph.
  • Fix what's wrong. Outdated names, services or details on other sites get repeated in AI answers. Ask the publisher for a correction.
  • Show up where buyers ask questions. Answering in communities and on video, under your own name, builds mentions with real context.

Your own pages still matter most when the question is about you. Getting those pages cited is covered step by step in how to get cited by ChatGPT.

What to avoid

Google's spam policies treat buying or selling links for ranking purposes as link spam. That includes sending someone a product in exchange for writing about it and including a link. Paid placements are fine when the links are qualified with rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow" and the sponsorship is clear.

Avoid fake reviews, posting under invented names in forums and mass-produced guest posts. They create inauthentic mentions, which Google says aren't as helpful as they might seem, and they can damage trust with the people who read them.

Be just as careful with bulk directory packages and automated profile pages. Listings created in a rush often carry old or conflicting details, and those details then spread to every page that copies them, including the pages AI tools read.

Common questions

Do unlinked brand mentions help in AI search?

They can shape what AI tools say, because answers are built from what pages say, not only what they link to. Google says its AI features can show what's being said about products and services across the web. No engine has published how much an unlinked mention counts, so treat it as useful context, not a lever with a known effect.

Can I pay to be mentioned on other sites?

You can buy advertising or sponsored content, but disclose it, and qualify any links with rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow". Google's spam policies treat buying links for ranking purposes as link spam, including sending a product in exchange for a write-up with a link. Undisclosed paid mentions also risk trust with readers.

How do I find out where my brand is mentioned?

Search your exact brand name in quotes, with and without your domain, and note who mentions you and whether they link. Ask AI tools your buyers' questions and record which sources they cite. Repeat monthly, so you can see which mentions appear in answers. Our guide to tracking AI mentions sets out a full routine.
