Dove: Producing Real-People Beauty Content That Doesn't Feel Staged
Dove has spent decades building a brand on realness, which makes the production bar unusually high — anything that feels art-directed into perfection works against the message. We came in to produce a batch of social-first content that could stand next to their global campaign work while being shot fast and lean.
The challenge
The existing social library leaned on polished campaign cutdowns. They performed fine on paid, but engagement fell off in the first three seconds on organic placements where audiences instantly clock a commercial. The brief was to make content that reads as genuine while still being on-brand and legally clean.
Our approach
- Cast real people rather than talent, and built the shoot day around conversation instead of a locked script.
- Shot handheld in natural light so the footage would sit natively in an Instagram or TikTok feed.
- Cut every piece three ways — a hook-forward paid version, a longer organic version, and a silent captioned version.
What we delivered
- 12 vertical social spots (15–30s)
- 3 longer-form brand pieces (60–90s)
- A stills library pulled from motion for organic and retail use
- Captioned and localized variants for paid testing
The results
- Average watch-through improved noticeably against the previous quarter's cutdowns
- The documentary-style edits outperformed the polished versions in early paid tests
- The stills pulled from motion removed the need for a separate photo shoot
The takeaway
The takeaway for any brand with a realness-driven message: the production style has to carry the message too. You cannot say authentic and shoot like a catalogue.
